Seven Things to expect from your IT partner
An information-technology partner in business should be just that – a partner in every sense of the word. Some IT consultants may focus on fulfilling your basic needs. They provide you with technology advice and supply whatever tangible products and services are necessary to facilitate your needs. But what you should reasonably expect from an IT "partner" goes well beyond that. They should take a vested interest in your business, providing the benefits and guidance that are central to your company's growth and success.

Here are seven things to expect from your IT partner:

1. Technical expertise – and strong communication skills. It goes without saying that an IT partner should be well versed in all aspects of IT technology. But that sort of expertise can be of little more than academic interest unless it is combined with a first-hand knowledge of how to apply it to your business.

2. An awareness of your budget – and resources. The support of an IT partner is proving increasingly essential to a broad range of small to medium-sized businesses, but the support given shouldn't be cripplingly expensive. When looking for an IT partner, ask how fees are structured. A responsive IT partner will be able to tailor their advice to the resources available to pay for it.

3. An industry watcher who can equate technology advances and developments with your needs. A proactive IT partner is one who understands new technological advances and can suggest updates and changes accordingly. Your partner should be one who keeps a close watch on the growth and development of your business – as well as on developments in the world of technology which might apply to your needs.

4. An advocate who cuts through product hype. As well as being someone who can evaluate the efficacy of new IT products, the best partner is one who can also study your existing products to see if they can provide improved technical solutions for your business problems.

5. A long-term planner, implementer, and strategist. Even the most carefully thought out technology plan is of little use if it grows old on the drawing board. An involved IT partner also knows how to implement a plan, whether by suggesting a gradual introduction over time or recommending a complete shut down for a change over. Be sure your IT partner knows the best way to put technology recommendations into place.

6. A keen ability to troubleshoot and solve problems. It's unrealistic to think that any element of technology, no matter how expensive or sophisticated, is totally immune to breakdowns. An effective IT partner should always be ready to address technical problems quickly. Even better, your IT partner should be proactive in overseeing regular maintenance as well as anticipating where and how problems might arise.

7. An interest in handling all your technology needs. Nothing can prove more annoying – not to mention wasteful – than having to hop from consultant to consultant or business to business to address individual elements of your technology needs. One final element when seeking an IT partner is to be assured that all your technology needs can be met from a single source, whether it is as involved as a completely new technology infrastructure or as elementary as a basic user question.
